Cap Care Without the Headache

Keep your favorite cotton, corduroy, and nylon caps looking fresh longer with these no-fuss tips on spot cleaning, drying, reshaping, and storage.

You finally found the cap — the one that fits perfectly, matches everything, and somehow makes every outfit look intentional. The last thing you want is to ruin it with a bad wash or a misshapen brim. Good news: keeping your cap game strong doesn't require a PhD in laundry science. Here's how to make your BRIM! caps last as long as your love for them.

Know Your Fabric First

Before you grab a cleaning cloth or toss anything in a sink, flip the cap over and check the label. Different materials have different moods, and respecting that is step one.

  • Cotton — forgiving and breathable, but it shrinks if you hit it with heat, so keep things cool and gentle.
  • Corduroy — the texture is part of the charm. Scrub too hard and you'll flatten those ridges forever. Light touches only.
  • Nylon — tough, fast-drying, and low-maintenance. Still, no machine washing — the structured panels and brim need hand-care to stay crisp.

Spot Cleaning: Your New Best Friend

For the vast majority of cap situations — a splash of coffee, a smudge from your hands, a little sweat buildup along the sweatband — spot cleaning is all you need. Full-soak washes should be a last resort, not your first move.

  1. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap or a gentle laundry detergent into a small bowl of cool water. Warm water can cause cotton to shrink or colors to bleed.
  2. Dip a soft-bristle toothbrush or a clean microfiber cloth into the solution and work it into the stain using small circular motions. For corduroy, brush in the direction of the grain to preserve the texture.
  3. Wipe away soap residue with a clean damp cloth. Don't rinse by dunking the whole cap — just the spot.
  4. Pat — don't rub — the area dry with a towel and move on to the drying step.

Avoid bleach and stain sprays with harsh solvents on any of our caps. They'll lift color and weaken the fabric faster than any stain ever could.

Drying: Slow Wins the Race

The dryer is not your cap's friend. High heat warps brims, shrinks cotton panels, and can melt or distort the internal structure that gives a cap its shape. The fix is simple: always air dry.

Set your cap on a clean, dry towel or prop it up on a rounded surface — a bowl, a jar, or even a rolled-up towel works great. You want the crown to keep its dome shape while it dries, not collapse inward. Place it somewhere with good airflow but away from direct sunlight, which can fade colors over time. Nylon caps can dry in under an hour. Cotton and corduroy might take a bit longer — just let them do their thing.

Reshaping: Bringing It Back to Life

Caps get squished — in bags, in cars, under other stuff. If yours has lost its curve or the brim went a little wonky, don't stress.

For the brim: gently bend it back to your preferred curve while the cap is slightly damp. Hold it in shape for 30–60 seconds. If the brim is fully dry and stiff, run a bit of steam from a clothing steamer or a kettle spout near (not on) the brim to soften it, then reshape.

For the crown: stuff the inside with crumpled tissue paper or a small towel to push the panels back out, then let it dry fully in that position. Steam works here too — hold the cap over steam for a few seconds, reshape with your hands, and let it cool in the right form.

Pro tip: a cap-shaped form or even a large coffee can is a perfect drying stand. Your cap will thank you every time you reach for it.

Storage: Set It Up Right

Where and how you store your cap between wears matters more than most people realize. A little intentionality here adds months — maybe years — to your cap's life.

  • Store caps upright or on a hook rather than stacking them. Stacking crushes the cap on the bottom every single time.
  • Keep them out of direct sunlight for long-term storage — UV exposure fades color gradually even when you're not wearing the cap.
  • Avoid humid spots like gym bags or bathroom shelves, which can encourage mildew in cotton and corduroy.
  • Traveling? Pack your cap brim-side down in a rigid bag, or wear it — that's literally the safest place for it.

Caring for your cap really comes down to a few simple habits: spot clean early, air dry always, reshape while damp, and store with intention. Do those four things consistently and your BRIM! caps will keep looking sharp wear after wear, season after season. Your fit deserves it — and honestly, so does your wallet.
